Canadian school designates cafeteria as ‘no food’ zone during Ramadan

A school in Calgary, Alberta, has allegedly designated parts of its cafeteria and lunchroom as “no food” zones during the Muslim holiday of Ramadan.

Fairview School reportedly sent an email to parents notifying them that the cafeteria and lunchroom would be used as “No Food Space” areas during lunchtime while the holiday is observed. The email, which was sent to parents last month and later shared on social media, said, “As we begin the month of Ramadan, we would like to acknowledge this meaningful time for many of our students, staff, and families. Ramadan is a month of reflection, prayer, generosity, and community. We extend our warm wishes to all who are observing and remain committed to ensuring our school is a supportive and respectful environment for everyone.”

The email continued by saying that to support students fasting, designated no food spaces will be provided during lunch. For students in grades 4 through 6, the cafeteria will be a “No Food Space for the first half of lunch,” and students will continue to go outside for the second half of lunch. For grades 7-9, the “lunchroom will be a No Food Space for the entire hour.” On days of bad weather, the learning commons will be a no-food space for all students in grades 4-9.

“Thank you for your continued partnership in fostering an inclusive and caring school community,” the school administration wrote.

As Ramadan approached, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a message to Canadians observing the holiday, noting concerns about anti-Muslim discrimination.

“As this sacred period begins, far too many Muslims in Canada are continuing to face troubling acts of Islamophobia. Combatting hate is a top priority for this government, and Islamophobia has no place in our country,” Carney said in his statement.

“At the heart of what it means to be Canadian is the fundamental value that everyone has the right to freedom, security, and the ability to thrive in our society. Together, we can build a country where all Muslims can live safely and proudly, without intimidation or fear,” he continued. “I wish everyone observing Ramadan a blessed and peaceful month."
