Following in the United Kingdom's and the United States' footsteps, Canadian politicians are beginning to distance themselves from the Black Lives Matter movement according to Blacklock's.

Senator Bev Busson, a former RCMP commissioner from British Columbia, attacked protestors who were demonizing police officers. They are "the finest people you will ever meet," declared the senator.

Busson went on to say that there was a "wave of hatred" against Canadian police officers, "I cannot stay silent any longer," she added.

Earlier in June, the Senate passed a motion that condemned how the police dealt with Black and Indigenous issues.

Regarding this debate, Busson wrote in a statement that "disturbingly, I see a tendency by some to stereotype equally each and every police officer with the same criminal motives."

"I am referring to the wave of hatred and disrespect directed at our police forces generally, and specifically at the RCMP," continued the senator.

"I urge that we recognize the dedication of literally thousands of police officers in Canada who go to work every day to protect the same citizens who now vilify them."

Busson was not the only senator who stood up for the police. Brent Cotter—who is a former dean of law at the University of Saskatchewan—called policing an "honourable profession."

"Our country needs police," he concluded.
