The Capital Police have requested that the National Guard continue occupying Washington DC for an additional 60 days, Forbes reports.

The National Guard was originally supposed to vacate the United States capital by Mar 12, but were reportedly asked to remain for a longer duration due to unspecified "threats" against the Capitol. No officials have provided any evidence of such threats.

The Pentagon is currently reviewing the request.

The National Guard was originally called in to Washington DC during the storming of Capitol Hill by pro-Trump rioters on Jan 6. The Guard has maintained a presence in the city since then.

The presence of the Guard has disgruntled some Republicans, however, with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) arguing that the only reason for their continued presence is to enrich defense contractors.

5,000 National Guardsmen continue to remain in Washington DC.
