23 percent said they would feel "very positive" and another 9 percent said "somewhat positive," if they saw a headline that Trump got assassinated.
The poll, conducted jointly by the Liberal Currents and the Center for Strategic Politics, surveyed 683 Democratic voters between September 3 and September 10. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.75 points.
Respondents were asked how they would feel "if they woke up tomorrow morning" to see each of five hypothetical headlines. One of the scenarios included "President Donald Trump was assassinated while speaking at a rally.” 23 percent said they would feel "very positive" and another 9 percent said "somewhat positive," for a combined 32 percent, nearly 1 in 3 Democrats surveyed.
43 percent said they would feel "very" or "somewhat" negative while 25 percent said they'd feel neither positive nor negative about the situation.
Democrats were presented with four other scenarios and asked how they would feel, which included a military coup that removed Trump from office. Regarding the military coup, 43 percent said they would feel “very positive” about the prospect while 16 percent said they would be “somewhat positive” about the news for a combined 59 percent, or a majority of Democrats feeling positive about having Trump removed via a military coup in the US. The other examples included the following scenarios with the majority of Democrats in each instance saying they would be “very” or “somewhat” positive:
- Impeachment and conviction by Congress: 87 percent combined positive
- Removal via the 25th Amendment: 84 percent combined positive
- Death from natural causes overnight: 55 percent combined positive
The shocking results of the poll come after there have been multiple assassination attempts on Trump, with the closest of him being killed in Butler, where Thomas Matthew Crooks shot at the president, but hit only his ear.
Recent reports have indicated that there has been an increase of assassination culture in the US as there have been more politically motivated attacks. This pattern has been marked by the most public assassination possibly since JFK, with Charlie Kirk getting shot to death at Utah Valley University.
