Conservative leadership candidate Jean Charest criticized Pierre Poilievre on Friday, claiming that the veteran MP encouraged lawlessness by voicing support for the Ottawa Freedom Convoy.
"Laws are not a buffet table, if you’re a legislator, from which you choose what you want. Because what you’re really saying to people is I’m above the law," Charest told the media, referring to Poilievre directly.
"You can’t be a leader of a party and the chief legislator of the country, as prime minister, and support people breaking the laws. That disqualifies you," Charest continued his thought, According to CTV News Ottawa.
"And if you want to be a leader in this country and a legislator, you can’t make laws and break laws," said Charest.
Poilievre has himself made his position clear on the issue previously. He has always supported Canadians' right to peaceful and legal protest.
Speaking on the fact that Charest is still quite far behind Poilievre in the polls in the race for the reins of the Conservative party, he commented, "I’m the underdog in this race."
"And you know what? I’ve been the underdog all my life. So I don’t mind being there, it’s a place I recognize."
Charest has come under fire by Poilievre and others for many issues, such as the fact that he previously held a position with Chinese military-backed Huawei.
