Federal prosecutors have dropped charges against a Canadian truck driver who was taken into custody at the US border after 2,200 pounds of marijuana was discovered in his rig last month. Ellen Michaels–the driver's lawyer–has made the argument that he was a victim of a drug smuggling scheme.

According to Tri-City News, 32-year-old Tasbir Singh was arrested on July 7 once US border agents found $3.2 million worth of marijuana in his truck.

Singh told authorities that he picked up compression springs in North York, Ontario. Due to COVID-19 rules, Singh never got out of his truck while it was being loaded.

Ellen Michaels has stated that Singh was the victim of marijuana dealers who managed to hack into the trucking company's system and load the trailer with the drug.

Singh was released from US custody on July 23. Originally from India, Singh missed his naturalization ceremony in Canada during his 16 day sentence.
