Global Times propagandist Hu Xijin scolded former political prisoner Michael Kovrig for using an image of a paper dove to symbolize his freedom.

"Enjoy your freedom," wrote Xijin, who works for the Chinese state-affiliated Times, "but don't insult [the] dove of peace please."

Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested in December of 2018 for violating US sactions, cemented a deal with US prosecutors that saw her freed and the charges against her eventually dropped.

The two Michaels (Spavor and Kovrig) were held for over 1,000 days, and both were charged with espionage. In August, Spavor was sentenced to 11 years in prison, while Kovrig has awaited sentencing.
