The Ottawa City Council has unanimously voted to begin renaming a street named after President Donald Trump after more than 25 years. The decision comes weeks after Trump signed an executive order directing the US government to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”
During a meeting on Wednesday, councillors unanimously approved a motion to rename Trump Avenue in Ottawa’s Central Park neighbourhood. The motion was introduced by River Ward Councillor Riley Brockington, and said that the street name “would not meet any of the criteria had it gone through a formal commemorative naming process.”
“This is a new beginning for the residents of Trump Avenue,” Brockington said, according to Global News. “I could speak at great lengths as to why it is time to rename Trump Avenue, but I don’t want to give a platform anymore to the person who is on the current street sign.”
The Central Park neighborhood has multiple New York-themed names, such as Bloomingdale Street. Trump Avenue was named roughly 25 years ago when Trump was known as a prominent New York real estate developer.
Brockington said that there have been conversations about a possible renaming since he took office in 2014. He also told Global News that he was “embarrassed” that Trump’s name is in the nation’s capital.
Residents previously considered changing the name in 2021. Of the 62 households on Trump Avenue, 21 voted in favor of a name change, 21 voted against it, and 20 did not participate. The city requires at least 50 percent plus one of the households to support the change for the process to move forward, according to CTV News.
The decision comes after relations with Canada and the United States have remained tense. Last month, President Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America. The order directed the Secretary of the Interior to take actions to rename the body of water, similar to Trump’s order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
“We filed all the necessary papers, documents, everything else. We notified all of the various people that we have to notify. So we’ve done everything that you have to do, and this is official, effective immediately," Trump said after signing the order.
