The pushback by Democrat Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia against the contents of Biden’s Build Back Better agenda caused climate activists to approach him in the streets.
Today Senator Joe Manchin was followed in-person by a large crowd of climate change protesters as he stepped off his houseboat into the streets of Washington DC.
"WE WANT TO LIVE! WE WANT TO LIVE!" they shout at him as he walks to Capitol Hill.
According to Newsweek, the activists are with the Sunrise Movement and they were motivated by the continued blockage in support from West Virginia’s Senator until he knows more about what’s in the Build Back Better bill.
It’s not the only moment of friction caught on film. A TikTok from "hungry4climatejustice" was posted eight hours ago.
The TikTok video is straightforward. "We tried to block Joe Manchin’s car and he tried to run us over," says the description. You can see several activists in front of the Senator’s vehicle blocking its path forward. One of them has a banner.
About fifteen seconds in you can see that the posterior of the car is also blocked with an activist standing in the way.
"PASS CLIMATE CHANGE BILLS" someone shouts.
The car inches forward slowly as activists push back against the hood. "We want to live! We want to live!" is shouted by the small crowd.
Manchin’s vehicle makes an escape.
Earlier this week, Progressive Squad member Cori Bush said Manchin is a racist for not jumping on board to support the Build Back Better bill immediately. Both he and Senator Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona have been the voices of skepticism for Democrats in negotiations over several weeks now.
It’s a set of circumstances that had previously led Sinema cornered by immigration activists into a bathroom stall, as well as being approached on an airplane.
