The news outlet headlined that the rape "provided fodder for an ascendant far right."
The outlet wrote that after the case from the Italian city of Catania went public, it was "seized upon as evidence that migrants should be blocked from entering the country" by the far-right.
All seven of the suspected rapists were Egyptian migrants with three of them being under 18.
In the report from CNN, reporter Barbie Latza Nadeau wrote, "Last month’s alleged gang rape in Catania has become not only a symbol of violence against women in the country, but a cause célèbre for Italy’s far-right government."
When Nadeau posted her article to X and was immediately slammed for the headline.
One wrote, "So, Barbie, if a person is opposed to the gang rape of 13 year old girls, that person is far right? I’m actually not sure you wrote the clickbait headline but you surely can’t be proud of it?"
Another wrote, "I will enjoy watching your company self-destruct in the coming years."
Nadeau reported in her article about how "Italy’s prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, came to power in September 2022 on an anti-immigration platform" even though Meloni's efforts to curb mass migration have not proved to be successful.
The CNN reporter also took aim at "the right-leaning newspaper Il Giornale" for writing in an op-ed, "Why are these individuals, without any requirement to access international protection, still in Italy and have not been subject to expulsion?”
"Because upon arrival in our country they declared themselves minors and the law prevents the rejection of irregular immigrants who have not yet reached the age of majority. Now they will go to trial for rape but, in the meantime, that little girl will forever carry with her the pain and trauma of rape, suffered at just 13 years old," the outlet published in its piece.
