Issues of inflation and the oil supply that the Carter administration faced, are mirroring the dilemmas mounting against President Biden in the polls now.
The newest update from CNN is critical of Biden’s performance on the economy. Their framing on the topic pairs President Biden with the tenure of Jimmy Carter during the 1970s. A sort of comparison that previously the left wasn’t forthcoming in making when describing the current White House’s performance.

According to CNN’s latest in-house poll, they have 44 percent who approve of Biden’s "economic performance," versus 55 percent who disapprove, with a minus-9 point spread for the net approval.
The outlet contextualizes it by taking the total poll averages, of -13, and contrast that with the "average president at this point" in office having a +5. The devastating result is "18 points worse than the average."
A decline in Biden’s approval poll numbers has been a regular story in the news cycle for the past several weeks of 2021. An NPR poll from Monday highlighted the downward spiral of going from 42 percent earlier in December, to 41 percent more recently.
It was at the beginning of the month that POLITICO used words like "slippage" and "polling rut" in describing survey results of Biden’s public approval.
When it comes to the issue of the economy it came up briefly within President Biden’s Tuesday address about the White House’s upcoming strategy to combat COVID-19 across the US. Reporters asked about Biden’s feelings toward Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia in light of his public opposition earlier this week against approving the Build Back Better bill in the Senate.
