The network’s layoffs are part of its efforts to focus on reducing production costs and consolidating teams, according to unnamed sources who spoke to CNBC. Additionally, some shows that are currently being produced in New York and Washington may move to Atlanta, where production costs are lower.
CNN has roughly 3,5000 worldwide employees. The job cuts are not expected to affect the network's top talent.
This restructuring follows a town hall earlier this month in which CNN CEO Mark Thompson revealed that parent company Warner Bros. Discovery had invested over $70 million in CNN’s digital operations. The funding will go toward hiring in areas such as data science and product development, which are seen as key growth opportunities.
In line with its digital pivot, CNN recently introduced a paywall, charging frequent users of its website $3.99 per month.
The decision to delay layoffs until after President Donald Trump's inauguration highlights the evolving media landscape in the US. As traditional cable news continues to face declining viewership, more consumers are turning to alternative platforms such as streaming services, social media, and podcasts.
