Conservatives lead the fight for small businesses

More than three weeks ago, the House of Commons passed a motion to pause Justin Trudeau's onerous audits on small and medium sized businesses receiving the wage subsidy. And yet the Liberals completely ignored the democratic will of Parliament and refused to pause these audits until after next year's tax season.

I was a small business owner before being elected. I know small and medium businesses in every part of the country have been hit hard by the pandemic, including in my riding of Calgary Rocky Ridge. Local businesses have had to close their doors for good, and many are struggling to survive past Christmas.

There is no Canadian economy without small and medium businesses. It's as simple as that. That's why Canada's Conservatives will always stand up for entrepreneurs and workers.

We fought the Liberals' draconian tax changes in 2017. We raised the alarm when Justin Trudeau said that small businesses were just a way for wealthy people to avoid paying taxes. We fought against taxes imposed by the Liberals that harm small businesses, including the escalator tax on alcohol, higher payroll taxes, and the carbon tax.

Since the start of the pandemic, we have worked with the government to pass crucial support measures and made constructive recommendations whenever we could. It was Conservatives that proposed changes to fix the wage subsidy, the rent subsidy and the Canadian Emergency Bank Account (CEBA).

Each small business owner supports a family. Most employ a whole team of dedicated employees. They donate to service clubs, community projects, and kids' sports team. They are the backbone of the Canadian economy, and the owners, workers and customers of these small businesses are our neighbours and our friends.

And now in the midst of the pandemic, people who have worked for years to build up a business are seeing their life's work vanish before their eyes. They stepped up for Canada, and Conservatives are standing up for them.

My colleagues and I are committed to continue our pressure on the Trudeau Liberals to start respecting hardworking entrepreneurs. Under the leadership of Erin O'Toole, Canada's Conservatives will continue to stand up for workers and entrepreneurs and ensure they get the support they need to weather this pandemic.
