With Greyhound Canada announcing on Thursday that it would be permanently cutting its bus routes across the country, Conservatives released a statement on Friday putting the blame on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

A statement released by several Conservative shadow ministers says that the impact that the company's closure will be felt greatly, especially in rural Canada.

"Many Canadians across Canada, including the most vulnerable, live in rural or more remote regions that depend heavily on intercity bus services to travel large distances between smaller towns and urban areas. These local economies rely on adequate access to their communities, with bus services being an important part," they write.

The blame, they say, falls squarely on Justin Trudeau's mismanagement of the third wave.

"As Greyhound continues to operate in the United States, it is difficult not to place the blame squarely on the dire economic situation in Canada we are facing from Justin’s third wave. Considering the millions that the liberals sent in aid to profitable corporations and insiders, this is truly remarkable. Nonetheless, investment was already leaving Canada after five years of Liberal management, but we see the third wave was just the final nail in the coffin."

Greyhound Canada has had its services suspended for over a year due to strict travel restrictions that were brought in during the first wave of COVID.

That, mixed with increasing competition and deregulation, was enough for the company to announce its closure.

“Under the Trudeau Liberals, too many Canadians are being left behind – particularly those living in rural communities. Canada’s Conservatives will secure our economy and our future with Canada's Recovery Plan. We will continue to fight for economic recovery in every sector, and every region, so no Canadian is left behind," the Conservatives write.

The company announced yesterday that it would continue its international routes with Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal once borders reopen.
