Pfizer began distribution Sunday morning of its recently FDA approved coronavirus vaccine, with trucks carrying the vaccine leaving its Michigan facility in droves.
With the help of UPS and FedEx, trucks will deliver 2.9 million units of the vaccine to 636 predetermined locations all over the nation this week, NBC News reports.
In addition to the plant in Michigan, vaccines are being produced at a breakneck pace in other facilities in Missouri and Massachusetts.
Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla stated: "I couldn’t be prouder of my fellow Pfizer colleagues and partners at BioNTech."
"Their historic science-driven effort has delivered a vaccine with the potential to help bring an end to the most devastating pandemic in a century," he continued.
Pfizer had previously been waiting for authorization from the FDA, which was fast-tracked and completed on Friday night, barely making a White House-imposed deadline.
The vaccine will reportedly be free of cost to the public, as insurance providers and the government will be footing the bill.
This first phase of the vaccine's roll-out will be for healthcare workers and people who have been admitted to healthcare institutions such as long-term care homes, as well as people who are considered to be high-risk for contracting the coronavirus.
Availability for the general public is expected for the late spring or early summer of the year 2021.
