New York governor Andrew Cuomo praised mayoral candidate Eric Adams while bashing current mayor Bill de Blasio as "hyper-political and not competent." Cuomo said new leadership for the city will be a good thing and that Eric Adams is the best choice for that.
"There are hundreds of mayors in New York, I work with all of them," Cuomo said. "It’s hard for me to work with an administration that is hyper-political and is not competent."
Adams, Brooklyn Borough President, will likely secure the Democratic nomination for New York City mayor, and given the partisan leanings of the city, will probably be the Big Apple's next mayor.
Because of a new "ranked choice" voting system in which no candidate on the ballot secured a 50 percent majority, however, vote tabulation will continue throughout the coming weeks. Adams has 31.7 percent of the vote as of Wednesday morning, according to the New York City Board of Elections.
"Confidence in the mayor is very, very important. Confidence in the leadership of the mayor and the competence of the mayor is very important," Cuomo said.
"And I think with a new mayor, you're gonna see both an increase in the confidence in leadership and increase in the competence of the management of New York City."
Cuomo says Adams, a former state senator as well, "will instill confidence" in part due to his status as a former cop. "I think he is a person who will step up and show real leadership, especially on the issue of quality of life and crime," he said. Cuomo then bashed de Blasio saying, "Doing nothing is the worst thing that you can do — and that’s what has happened here."
In response, de Blasio spokesman Bill Neidhardt took shots at Cuomo in a series of Tweets saying, "This is all coming from an insecure man so mired in his own scandals that he’s actively rooting against New York City."
