The family of 12-year-old Maya Gebala, who was critically injured in a shooting in British Columbia in February when trans-identified shooter Jesse Van Rootselaar, also known as Jesse Strang, opened fire at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, has revealed that UFC president Dana White has offered to fully pay for her medical treatment at a Los Angeles hospital that has extensive resources for brain trauma cases.

An update from Gebala’s mother, Cia Edwards, on Wednesday stated that she and her daughter’s medical team had a meeting about Gebala leaving the ICU. She has been in the ICU since the early February shooting, which resulted in the deaths of eight people.

In the update, Edwards said that after a week of being in the ICU, "we were contacted by the president of the UFC, Dana White, he’d offered Maya full paid medical in one of the world’s most top tier hospitals in LA California. For anyone who watches UFC, they put my babes name in the ring. Super cool. The children’s hospital has an extensive brain trauma clinic and more resources. However, Maya hadn’t been stable enough to travel. Until now."

She said that "providing nothing serious happens between now and Monday. We may finally start looking towards a future for my girls. Stability and recovery."

A March 24th update from Edwards stated that a bullet entered Gebala's head above her left eyebrow, shattering her skull and dragging bone fragments into her head. She has also suffered infections, and had to undergo surgery on Friday after an abscess at a suture site burst. The Wednesday update stated that a culture test came back with no cultures from the wound, and had not grown in size.

The GoFundMe set up in the wake of the shooting has brought in over $500,000 towards Maya’s recovery.
