A driver's dashboard camera caught a robber smashing the back window of a car before stealing camera equipment from the backseat in the middle of the highway in San Francisco.

The clip shows a grey Toyota Prius being trailed by a black Honda in heavy traffic. When the Prius stops moving, a man hopped out of the back seat of the Honda, smashed the back window of the Prius, stole an object, and quickly got back in his car before a getaway driver drove off.

The thief was wearing a black sweater and black pants, according to the video.

The Prius occupants can be seen towards the end of the clip vacating their car in disbelief, but not quickly enough to catch the thief, who managed to pull off his heist in the span of a few seconds.

According to a crowdfunding page for the victim, the thief stole $7,000 worth of camera equipment. The thieves had reportedly followed the victims as they left a video shoot.

Crime has skyrocketed in San Francisco since the middle of 2020, as it has in many major American cities. The city has seen a 42 percent rise in robberies, a 34 percent rise in car thefts, and a 39 percent rise in cases of arson between November of 2019 and 2020.
