The June 6 fundraiser, which would have been unthinkable just a year ago, will also be attended by other tech leaders.
Silicon Valley's David Sacks is set to host a fundraiser for GOP frontrunner and former president Donald Trump at his Pacific Heights home Broadcliff. The June 6 fundraiser, which would have been unthinkable just a year ago, will also be attended by other tech leaders. Sacks was part of the so-called "PayPal mafia" with Elon Musk, Peter Thiel and others.
Trump supporters in Silicon Valley have kept their preference for the MAGA candidate a bit of a secret, Puck reports. "Until somewhat recently, America First conservatives were essentially an underground society within the industry. But the last three years have been defined by backlash to perceived progressive overreach, and even a touch of Trump nostalgia," Puck writes.
The fundraiser is something of a "show of force" for Sacks, per Puck, which predicts that the crypto industry will likely turn out in numbers. This as Politico reports that Trump's stance on crypto has Dems running scared.
Trump is "poised to be the first major party nominee to court cryptocurrency traders," Politico recently reported. "It’s leaving some Democrats feeling uneasy."
Trump had spoken to those in this industry at a Mar-a-Lago event, saying that "crypto backers 'better vote' for him because of the way the Biden administration has unleashed a regulatory crackdown on the industry," Politico said.
Sacks' All-In podcast co-host Chamath Palihapitiya joins Sacks on the host committee for the Trump fundraiser, which further gives concern for Dems. Palihapitiya has recently become the CEO at Hustle, a messaging app "widely used by Democratic organizations - including the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee."
“It’s extremely unusual for the CEO of a major Democratic tech company to actively support the Republican nominee for president, to say the least,” said a "plugged-in" source, per Puck.
President Joe Biden has his own devotees in California and will be attending a star-studded Hollywood fundraiser bash in June. The Democratic incumbent has thus far been leading Trump in polling, but recent numbers released by the Trump camp show that the gap is starting to close as the election season kicks into high gear.
