Milwaukee County prosecutors filed criminal charges against daycare employee Passion Watson.
A daycare worker has been charged after cocaine was found in the system of an 11-month-old child at a Kindercare in Wisconsin. Prosecutors charged the worker with "possession of cocaine on or near certain places" in the case.
24-year-old daycare worker Passion Watson was charged after his mother took him to Children's Wisconsin hospital for an evaluation earlier in May and noticed several abrasions on the now one-year-old baby. The boy's urine tested positive for benzoylecgonine, a primary metabolite of cocaine, per a report from ABC12.
After ruling out the mother as a suspect with a search of her home, detectives then looked at the boy's daycare where a drug-detecting dog alerted to a backpack found in the closet of an infant room. They found a white substance in Watson's backpack. Watson admitted to taking cocaine socially about two times a month but denied that she had knowledge of the substance in her backpack at the time. Detectives arrested Watson at the facility on the spot.
"My life is forever changed," the boy's mother told FOX6. "How could you do that to an innocent baby?"
"Every day, he is coming here thinking he’s safe," Hopson added. "I can’t imagine how scared he was." Hopson said that the case began when she had noticed the baby boy came home with a bruised nose, then a black eye, and then some scratches on the child, leading to the medical visit.
"He’s just reckless, he’s agitated – like he doesn’t play with his toys," the mother told the news outlet. Legal representation for the family is pushing for child neglect charges to be filed in addition to the drug charges because of the physical injuries. Court records indicated that Watson posted $1,500 bond after being arrested.
