Outgoing NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio had to move his farewell ceremony and press conference indoors after a crowd of protestors gathered outside Manhattan's City Hall to voice their displeasure with him.
In the video below, one can see at the beginning a sign which is prominently displayed. It features a likeness of de Blasio's face with a "poop" emoji on top of it. The caption reads "Buh-bye, sh*t head," and, below it, "thanks for f*cking up our city."
Other protestors were gathered waving American flags. Things were apparently very calm and quiet at the time of the video.
Nonetheless, Thursday's events, scheduled to start at 3pm, appear to have been moved inside by de Blasio's handlers, ostensibly to evade protestors and the media.
Despite no notice having been given, they did not take place as scheduled in their planned location, and staff were seen moving the podium which had been set up for the occasion back into the building.
De Blasio eventually appeared in the rotunda inside City Hall, in front of a much more favorable audience, at 5pm.
“Everybody, what we did here in these eight years has profoundly changed the city and the effects of what we have done have only begun to be felt. I want everyone to feel this," de Blasio told a vetted crowd.
"What you have all done and there was so much passion that as I look around, I can feel the times when we work together to make something happen and so often we were told that could not be done."
"But you did it. You changed millions of people’s lives. You changed the way people are educated. We changed the way people get housing and the way people get mental health care that was so often denied. We changed policing in this town. We’ve changed so many things."
