"They're in a frenzy to give tax breaks, tax cuts to the wealthiest, the very wealthiest billionaires in America.
Schumer started off, citing a comment from Elon Musk on Joe Rogan's podcast last week, where the entrepreneur said that Social Security is a "Ponzi scheme." Musk added at the time that government does not hold people's contributions to Social Security, but instead spends those funds on other items, creating a social security deficit which drives up the national debt and imperils Americans' retirement.
Schumer said that the US is in a "pincer movie" and that "On the one hand, Doge has cut 7,000 workers from Social Security, and on the other, Elon Musk says Social Security is the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time."
He then added, "They're in a frenzy to give tax breaks, tax cuts to the wealthiest, the very wealthiest billionaires in America. They're just frenetic about it."
Schumer ended his remarks, saying, "We need every person who's a recipient, or would be recipient, who would like to get this benefit, to call their congressmen, their Republican congressmen and senators, and give one simple sentence, hands off my Social Security."
Murray then spoke, claiming that "Trump and Elon are now pushing all SSA employees out the door," despite the number of employees that would be let go is only around 12 percent of the agency's workforce.
"Donald Trump and Elon Musk are taking a wrecking ball to the Social Security Administration and putting your Social Security benefits at risk," Murray claimed. She then cited the slow process with people have to go through in order to claim disability that many Americans go through, and that the cutting of the employees would make that even worse.
Klobuchar as well as Wyden then added similar remarks, saying that the job cuts would be threatening the Social Security payments of seniors and others.
Musk, as well as Trump have promised to cut bloat as well as inefficiencies in the federal government across different agencies. As part of that, the SSA said on Friday that it would be cutting down the 57,000 workers at the SSA to just 50,000, per CNBC. Trump has promised to not touch Social Security as well as backed a resolution in the House that would eliminate the tax on Social Security benefits.
