In a press conference on Friday, Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a vehement response to Biden's admonition that the US could impose certain restrictions if the public isn't "vigilant".
"To even contemplate doing any type of lockdown, honestly it's insane. [Further restrictions are] not gonna happen in the state of Florida. We're gonna continue doing what works, but under no circumstances would we entertain anything of the sort."
This represents the second time this year DeSantis has publicly stood up to Biden and denounced him for his stance on lockdowns.
New infections and deaths due to COVID have been steadily trending down for some time now, but Biden warned the public, saying the following:
"Even if we devote every resource we have, beating this virus and getting back to normal depends on national unity. And national unity isn’t just how politics and politicians vote in Washington, what the loudest voices say on cable or online. Unity is what we do as fellow Americans. Because if we don’t say vigilant and the conditions change, then we may have to reinstate restrictions to get back on track."
DeSantis responded:
"Biden last night said that they may have to impose more lockdown-type policies in the future. I can tell you, that ain't happening in Florida. We are not going to let him lock down Florida."
