Former CNN host Don Lemon announced on Wednesday that he is leaving the social media platform X, citing concerns over updated terms of service. In a video posted on the platform, Lemon explained his decision was due to new changes that require any lawsuits against the company to be handled in the Northern District of Texas.

“I have loved connecting with all of you on Twitter and then on X for all of these years, but it’s time for me to leave the platform. I once believed it was a place for honest debate and discussion, transparency, and free speech, but I now feel it does not serve that purpose,” Lemon stated.

Lemon went on to cite a report from the Washington Post, highlighting how the terms of service mandate that “all disputes be brought exclusively in the US District Court for the northern district of Texas or state courts located in Tarrant County, Texas." Lemon expressed concerns made by the outlet that this change positions lawsuits in a legal environment favorable to conservatives, making it potentially easier for X to protect itself from criticism and litigation. The Washington Post wrote that the decision “ensures that such lawsuits will be heard in courthouses that are a hub for conservatives, which experts say could make it easier for X to shield itself from litigation and punish critics.”

Lemon emphasized that while he will no longer be active on X, he remains committed to engaging with audiences through other platforms, including YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and Bluesky.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of Lemon’s uneasy relationship with X owner Elon Musk. A previously anticipated exclusive streaming deal between Lemon and X reportedly fell apart earlier this year following a contentious interview with Musk, where Lemon questioned Musk on personal topics. Lemon reportedly made demands during contract negotiations that included hosting the first podcast in outer space via SpaceX, a Tesla Cybertruck, a $5 million advance payment of an $8 million salary, and equity in X. Lemon also sued Musk for "psychological and emotional distress, humiliation, and mental and physical pain and anguish" over the canceled contract.
