“You know, the president is out there doing everything he can, not just at the border, but overall for families."
Senator Elizabeth Warren defended President Biden's handling of border and immigration issues during a combative interview on ABC with Martha Raddatz this weekend.
Raddatz highlighted the significant increase in border apprehensions under Biden's administration, noting that from February 2021 to May 2024, there have been nearly 7 million border apprehensions. This number starkly contrasts with the just over 2 million apprehensions during Donald Trump's entire first time in office.
“What did the president do wrong?” Raddatz asked after presenting these figures.
Warren refuted the notion that Biden had mishandled the situation. Instead, she blamed Republicans for obstructing a congressional bill on border security.
Raddatz countered by pointing out that Trump also lacked congressional immigration reform during his first term, yet the number of attempted border crossings was significantly lower.
Warren reiterated that President Biden is “doing what he can with the resources available to him” and emphasized his efforts to support families.
“You know, the president is out there doing everything he can, not just at the border, but overall for families, and the action he took in this last week is exactly Joe Biden being Joe Biden. Think for just a minute about what it means for half a million families, that little kids go off to school in the morning, and they don't have to worry about whether or not mom or dad is still going to be part of their family when they get home,” Warren said.
For months leading up to an executive order that Biden enacted earlier in June. Its stated goal was to limit immigration and was similar to the border bills that failed to pass in Congress.
President Biden has continued to preside over a border crisis that has seen millions of illegal immigrants attempt to enter the country illegally from Mexico. Despite acting on this crisis, he has pushed for orders that are being labeled by critics as "mass amnesty," including a recent move to make the path to citizenship easier for 500,000 non-citizen spouses married to US citizens in the country.
