"We have a big meeting. It’s going to be, I think, very important for Russia, and it’s going to be very important for us."
The location of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, which lies on the northern end of the city, met the security requirements for such a meeting of international leaders, per CNN. Trump is expected to spend at least part of the meeting with Putin in a one-on-one meeting, the White House said. Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s aide, said that the one-on-one talks would begin around 11:30 am local time (3:30 pm ET), with a joint news conference following, per NBC News.
Those in the Russian delegation will include Putin, Ushakov, Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev, Ushakov said.
Speaking about the summit on Thursday, Trump told reporters, "We have a big meeting. It’s going to be, I think, very important for Russia, and it’s going to be very important for us, and important for us only in that we’re going to save a lot of lives."
He later added, suggesting a second meeting between himself, Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, "We have a meeting with President Putin tomorrow. I think it’s going to be a good meeting, but the more important meeting will be the second meeting that we’re having. We’re going to have a meeting with President Putin, President Zelensky, and myself, and maybe we’ll bring some of the European leaders along, maybe not."
"And I think President Putin will make peace, and I think President Zelensky will make peace. We’ll see if they can get along, and if they can, it’ll be great."
Putin said on Thursday that the Trump administration is making "quite energetic and sincere efforts to stop the fighting, stop the crisis and reach agreements that are of interest to all parties involved in this conflict." He added that those efforts are intended to "create long-term conditions of peace between our countries and in Europe, and in the world as a whole."
Zelensky has said that his country "will not give Russia any awards for what it has done" and that "Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier." He added, "Any decisions that are without Ukraine are at the same time decisions against peace. They will not bring anything. These are dead decisions. They will never work."
