The group of suspects is believed to be linked to the South American Theft Group (SATG), an organized network of foreign nationals who travel throughout the US to rob wealthy homes and businesses.
According to a report by Fox News, one of the incidents was caught on video showing two masked men armed with handguns chasing a resident through his home while he screamed for help. The footage also showed the suspects striking the victim during the attack.
The group of suspects is believed to be linked to the South American Theft Group (SATG), an organized network of foreign nationals who travel throughout the United States to rob wealthy homes and businesses. ICE said members of the group often use encrypted messaging apps, disposable phones, and conduct surveillance of neighborhoods to identify potential victims. Many of the suspects are reportedly in the country illegally or on expired visas.
Four individuals were federally indicted, and two have been convicted in connection with the Texas break-ins.
In September, 38-year-old Joel Hallynson Espinal-Cantareo was convicted and sentenced to more than 11 years in federal prison for interference with interstate commerce by robbery. Espinal-Cantareo, who entered the country illegally from Honduras, participated in at least three armed home invasions at residences in Irving, Cedar Hill, and Frisco. During the robberies, business owners were pistol-whipped, zip-tied, and forced to hand over money and valuable property.
"This 11-year sentence sends a clear message that violent crime and threats to public safety will not be tolerated," said Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Dallas Special Agent in Charge Travis Pickard, according to Fox News. "Espinal-Cantareo's actions affected small businesses and endangered lives. This significant sentence reflects the seriousness of those crimes. ICE will continue to work closely with our federal, state and local partners to protect our communities and bring violent offenders to justice."
