“Attacks on law enforcement are unacceptable and those responsible will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The safety of our residents and visitors remains our highest priority."
A chaotic block party in North Charleston, South Carolina, led to multiple arrests after several police officers were assaulted while responding to reports of gunfire.
The North Charleston Police Department released a statement following the circulation of a viral video showing a female officer being attacked by a black mob. Police said the violence that erupted during a neighborhood block party in the Chicora-Cherokee community spiraled out of control, resulting in multiple arrests and the seizure of several firearms and a makeshift spear.
Among those arrested were three juveniles and one adult.
According to the initial report, officers responded to a so called "teen takeover" block party after reports of gunfire and individuals shooting fireworks at passing vehicles, despite officers having already met with event organizers the day before to secure the event and make sure emergency vehicles could safely enter.
Officers arrived and were told that multiple people were discharging firearms at the event. Officers made public announcements ending the event and ordering everyone to leave. Despite this, fights broke out, and additional shots were fired. When officers intervened and separated the fights, multiple officers were assaulted, including two female officers who had minor injuries.
“Attacks on law enforcement are unacceptable and those responsible will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The safety of our residents and visitors remains our highest priority,” the North Charleston Police Department stated.
Accoridng to a report by ABC News 4, multiple agencies had responded to the incident, including the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, the Charleston Police Department, and the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office. Chief of Police Ron Camacho gave a press conference on Sunday, saying additional information would be available after the weekend.
