Marion County law enforcement in Florida took first-grade teacher Hiromi Adams into custody on Tuesday afternoon after authorities found the elementary school educator in possession of MDMA—more commonly referred to as ecstasy or Molly.

According to a police statement made on Facebook, School Resource Officer (SRO) Edwin Velasquez of Hammett Bowen Elementary School saw Adams, 37, acting strangely. After a wellness check from the school clinic, Adams was reportedly seen making an attempt to reach the school lavatory before leaving the building, prompting concerns that Adams might be concealing something in the bathroom.

After searching the restroom—a part of the school facility also used by the students—Velasquez allegedly found a bottle with Adams' name on it. The alleged container held half a green pill and a small plastic bag with a powder-like substance.

School administrators reported the teacher to authorities and Adams was arrested sometime afterward. She was arrested off school property by sheriff's deputies.

A search of her person revealed that Adams was also allegedly in possession of Suboxone, a drug often used to treat narcotic dependence. Adams was taken to the Marion County Jail and is facing two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, MDMA has a similar effect as hallucinogens like mescaline or LSD with a period of impact that lasts from three to six hours. The federal government has labeled the drug a Schedule I substance, meaning that it's not used for any medicinal purposes and can be highly misused.

"Please know that these early grades are crucial stepping stones for your child's future success in school and in life," Adams wrote in the school's profile on her.

"Be assured that I will do my best to make this school year a safe and enjoyable time for your child, filled with real learning with the struggles going on right now."
