"He is an animalistic predator whose actions are beyond words."
On Wednesday, an illegal immigrant who had been deported back to Nicaragua five times was sentenced to 19 years in prison by Judge Alison Hatheway, for raping a disabled woman in Ohio.
The 40-year-old German Mathews pleaded guilty in November to rape, felonious assault, and kidnapping claiming that he was "possessed by a demon" at the time of the attack.
The assault took place on April 29, when Mathews pushed the woman down a hill before beating her and raping her. A witness called the police immediately who arrived while the assault was still in progress.
Forest Park police Sgt. Jackie Dreyer told the Hamilton County Common Pleas Court that Mathews' hands "were covered in the victim's blood" and that the assault was one of the most brutal crimes on a stranger that she had ever investigated in her 20-plus years on the force.
"He is an animalistic predator whose actions are beyond words,” Dreyer added.
FOX 19 reports that Mathews' defense attorney James Bogen argued that it was likely that he was experiencing alcohol-induced psychosis at the time of the attack and has no memory of the assault. He claimed that Mathews "was horrified" when he was shown police bodycam footage from the incident.
He added that the man who assaulted the woman "is not the German Mathews you see here today."
Mathews had previously been deported five different times after he first crossed into the US in 2005. The first time he was given a voluntary order to return to Mexico after he was caught, only to be arrested for drunk driving and driving without a license in Miami a few weeks later, Breitbart News reports.
In 2012, Mathews was arrested on charges of sexual battery and was deported to Nicaragua by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Between 2016 and 2017, Mathews was deported on three separate occasions.
