During a 2022 White House briefing, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) would be providing funds to help cities provide shelter and other humanitarian aid to illegal immigrants coming into the country. The clip resurfaced this week as Jean-Pierre said that it was "categorically false" that FEMA was helping to provide aid for illegal immigrants in the US for shelters.

During the September 2022 briefing, Jean-Pierre was asked about illegal immigrants getting transported out of different US cities by busses and how the government was supporting cities to assist with the migrants coming into the country.

The press secretary told reporters at the time, "So FEMA regional administrators have been meeting with city officials on-site to coordinate available federal support from FEMA and other federal agencies."

Jean-Pierre added, "Funding is also available through FEMA's emergency food and shelter program to eligible local governments and not-for-profit organizations upon request to support humanitarian relief for migrants. We'll continue to do what we can as a federal government to support these cities as we rebuild our asylum processing system after it was gutted by the Trump administration."

This week, it was reported that FEMA has been providing around $641 million in funding for shelters around the country for illegal immigrants. The locations with the shelters include Salt Lake County, Utah; San Jose, California, Washington DC, and many others.

When Jean-Pierre was asked about the funds, which were diverted from FEMA earlier this year to help illegal immigrants, she said, "It is not true, it is a false statement, and look, the fact of the matter is, I think Washington Post fact-checker did a piece, and the headline recently, just moments ago, not too long ago, and the headline was 'No, Biden didn’t take FEMA relief money to use on migrants — but Trump did."
