"I think the facts are indisputable at this point, and so I believe it’ll be the consensus of this body that she should be expelled."
House Speaker Mike Johnson has said Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick could be expelled from Congress as early as next week over allegations that she stole $5 million in FEMA funds.
Last month, a House ethics subcommittee reported that a panel determined that 25 of 27 counts of ethics violations against Cherfilus-McCormick had been proven. The Florida Democrat has also been federally indicted. She is accused of taking $5 million FEMA funds for personal use, and the committee has scheduled a hearing on April 21 to determine what sanctions should be imposed.
Johnson said he believes the House will agree that the congresswoman should be expelled.
“I expect that they will come forward with a recommended punishment for the Congress, and I suspect that that may be expulsion. In my view, that would be appropriate,” Johnson said.
The speaker also called the facts regarding her allegations “indisputable.”
“I have been a zealous guardian of due process around here,” Johnson told reporters on Tuesday. “I do think certainly on Cherfilus-McCormick, the Ethics Committee has gone through all of its processes, and they found some alarming facts. I think the facts are indisputable at this point, and so I believe it’ll be the consensus of this body that she should be expelled. I mean, that certainly rises to the level that’s needed.”
Cherfilus-McCormick is one of many representatives to face calls to be ousted in recent weeks. Both Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell and Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales, who have faced allegations of sexual misconduct, have recently opted to leave office instead of facing expulsion.
Lawmakers are also speaking out about Cherfiuls-McCormick’s expulsion. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna wrote, “We have your expulsion vote ready to be called up on the 21st. Either resign or be expelled. Those are your two options. So America is tracking: Sheila stole $5 million in FEMA funds.”
A resolution to expel the congresswoman was already filed by Rep. Greg Steube, who plans to bring it to the House floor when the ethics findings are released, per The Hill.
