Google has interfered in US elections at least 41 times since 2008. The implications of the report could be far-reaching for the integrity of elections.

According to the Media Research Center (MRC), researchers compiled a report of 41 different times that Google interfered in elections beginning in 2008. This pattern intensified in 2016 and is continuing into the 2024 election.

Some highlights of the organization's findings include that Google endorsed Barack Obama for the office and censored support for Hillary Clinton. A reporter at the time, Simon Owen, reported that pro-Clinton blogs were suspected by the tech giant. “[N]early all of [the censored bloggers] had three things in common,” Owens wrote. “Most were pro-Hillary Clinton blogs, all were anti-Barack Obama, and several were listed on justsaynodeal.com, an anti-Obama website.”

In the 2016 election, Google used its algorithm and "partners" to push Clinton over the edge to beat former President Donald Trump. This included excluding autofill results for Clinton that would reflect poorly on the politician with regard to alleged crimes against her.

The tech giant also worked with "partners" to boost the Latino vote that was uncovered by Tucker Carlson at the time.

During the 2020 primaries, Google disabled Tusli Gabbard's Google Ads account as she was being searched the most among any Democratic candidate. "Google’s discriminatory actions against my campaign are reflective of how dangerous their complete dominance over internet search is, and how the increasing dominance of big tech companies over our public discourse threatens our core American values," she told the New York Times at the time.

During the lead-up to the 2024 election, Google has already started to interfere. According to MRC, the tech giant has buried Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s campaign page as well as any other Democrat challenger in search results. When the search bar had “Republican presidential campaign websites," Google brought up Democrat Mariane Williamson, and not former President Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, as well as others.
