Green Party leader-for-life Elizabeth May has managed to irritate a large swath of Canadians by suggesting that the United States is no longer safe and that Canada should accept American minority citizens as refugees.

According to May, our neighbour to the south has become an entirely unsafe country under the leadership of President Donald Trump, and as such, Canada must accept Americans who claim refugee status.

"We must not turn them away," said May in Ottawa on Wednesday. "Donald Trump has made the United States no longer safe."

May uttered these comments during a press conference that she called to address the racial tension in the US, alongside the death of George Floyd.

May went on to argue that the president's conduct has done little to placate the grieving country. In fact, May argued that Trump had made things worse through his capricious words and actions.

To establish her case, May pointed to Trump's now controversial photo-op in front of a church in Washington D.C., and to his spat with Twitter.

As a result of this, concluded May, the prime minister should look to tear up Canada's Safe Third Country agreement with the US.

It’s clear that if you’re Muslim, if you’re black, if you’re latina, if you’re Indigenous, the United States is not a safe country," she added.
