On Wednesday, Texas governor Greg Abbott reiterated his declaration of an "invasion" at the southern border, as illegal migrants from all over the world continue to make their way into the United States at an unprecedented rate. He had originally written a letter to the Biden administration in November 2022 reminding officials that the federal government was responsible for safeguarding states against such incursions.

Instead of helping protect Texas from the influx of people, the Biden administration has prevented the state from securing the border, even going so far as to remove safeguards put in place to deter potential crossings.

"I officially declared an invasion at our border because of Biden's policies," Abbott said in a post on X, attaching a photo of the aforementioned letter. "We deployed the Texas National Guard, DPS & local law enforcement. We are building a border wall, razor wire & marine barriers. We are also repelling migrants."

In the letter, Abbott explained to the Biden administration that it had violated Article IV, Section 4 of the US Constitution, which states that the federal government "shall protect each of [the states] against Invasion."

Abbott argued that as a result of Washington's "sustained dereliction of duty," he was forced to invoke Article I, Section 10, Clause 3 of the Constitution, which enables the state to "protect its own territory against invasion by the Mexican drug cartels."

"Your open-border policies, which have catalyzed an unprecedented crisis of illegal immigration, are the sole cause of Texas having to invoke our constitutional authority to defend ourselves," he continued, adding that, "Texans are paying the price for your failure."

One of the many tactics Texas employed was the installation of razor wire in Eagle Pass, one of the most heavily trafficked areas of the border. On Wednesday, officers cut the wire at the behest of the Biden administration.

Abbott decried the move, suggesting it was "opening the floodgates to illegal immigrants." Not one to let the federal government dictate policies in his state, the governor announced that he "immediately deployed more Texas National Guard to repel illegal crossings & install more razor wire."
