Health Canada has released a list of over 50 recalled hand sanitizer products found in Canadian stores, these products contain industrial-grade ethanol. Industrial grade ethanol or denaturants are deemed to be non acceptable ingredients for use in sanitizers in Canada.
Health Canada told CTV News that “the industrial-grade ethanol used in the recalled products may also contain impurities and other unapproved chemicals not suited for use in hand sanitizers.”
The Health Canada Risk Assessment mentions a concern about potential carcinogenicity (or the potential for a substance to cause cancer.) According to Alberta Health Services, labelling a chemical as carcinogenic is a reflection of the hazard that the chemical may pose. According to Health Canada, use of these products may also have led to dry skin, upper respiratory system issues and eye irritation.
Last updated on Tuesday, August 4, the recall list advises “anyone with the products in their home to stop using them immediately and consult a health-care professional if they have health concerns.”The Government of Canada has also released a list of antiseptic and antibacterial hand sanitizers that meet Health Canada's requirements and are authorized for sale in Canada.
