A high school baseball team in Burbank, California was suspended and their season nearly cancelled, all over a team photo where people appeared without masks.
Practices and drills were suspended for a week, and all the seniors who were team members were suspended for two weeks.
According to local outlet ABC 7, not the school but actually the school district itself (the Burbank Unified School District) saw the photo and took issue with the lack of masks and/or social distancing in the photo, which is against the very strict lockdown measures in place in California.
"They were definitely in talks on canceling the whole season over that picture. But our vice president of athletics and our coach really fought for us and kept the season alive," said Rory Freck, one of the people in the photo in question.
"I don't quite understand because [of] the timeline on this. The picture was taken in January and we posted it on a social media page."
"We were just trying to do right by the boys and get their picture in the yearbook. Something that has been done for decades and they all got punished for it," said Shari Vanole, one of the team members' parents, who went on to describe the disciplinary measures as "unnecessary and an abuse of power."
