People in Hoboken NJ may be subject to a new ordinance soon, in which they will be required to wear a mask even outdoors, or face a hefty $250 fine. The ordinance would be in effect everywhere in Hoboken, with exceptions.

The rules governing the proposed legislation are causing confusion among many people. The rule apparently would not apply for families sitting together outside in a park, people working out by themselves, or people eating or drinking something.

It would, however apply to people walking down Hoboken streets according to Daily Wire. It’s not clear whether the rule would, for example, apply to someone walking down a Hoboken street while eating or drinking something.

The ordinance also states that first-time violators will receive an official warning; the fine would apply to repeat offenders only, raising questions about the practicality and ease of enforcement.

“I think once people start getting warnings, realizing there are financial consequences to not wearing a mask, that compliance will increase and that really is the goal here,” said Phil Cohen, a Hoboken City Council member. “A lot of visitors on Washington Street, a lot of visitors on the waterfront are just not complying,

Tensions are very high in New Jersey these days, with plenty of conflict over things such as mandatory mask use.

Other cities, such as Toronto, Miami, Melbourne and Bogotá, also have similar legislation in place, with mixed results and mixed reactions from residents and visitors.

Even more extreme measures have been suggested in some parts of the world. A member of the Nashville City Council even went as far as to say that people not wearing masks  should be “tried for murder or attempted murder.”

New Jersey to date still has the unfortunate distinction of being the US state with the most deaths per capita due to the coronavirus.
