A homeless man was taken into custody by Santa Monica, CA police after reportedly attempting to drown a woman and assaulting others on Monday at the Ocean Front Walk.
The Santa Monica Police Department is investigating the incidents which left one woman and a 17-year-old girl with serious injuries that required her to be taken to the hospital, according to ABC 7.
The motive behind the attacks remains unclear. One victim, who tried to intervene, recounted her experience, saying, "He turned his attention towards me, tried to strangle me ... bit the heck out of my ear and tried to dislodge my pants from their original resting position.”
Santa Monica Police Lieutenant Erika Aklufi detailed the assault on another victim, explaining that the suspect, “attacked a third victim who was a woman in her 70s and pulled her into the water and actually was holding her under the water when lifeguards arrived.” The homeless individual in question is now facing several felony charges.
Last month, another homeless man was also arrested for attempting to rape a young female jogger on the beach path, and a different man was apprehended for assaulting a 73-year-old elderly woman.
"We are seeing in Santa Monica meth use, fentanyl use, lots of drugs that can have negative impacts on people's behavior. It does make them more aggressive," said Aklufi.
The recent incidents of violence and drugs prompted the Santa Monica Coalition to display a large sign at a city council meeting on Tuesday night reading, “Santa Methica is not safe,” highlighting the community's growing concerns about safety and drug use.
