House Speaker Mike Johnson says he 'expects' Dems to refuse to certify election results if Trump wins White House: report

"They have objected for often ridiculous reasons, and I expect that many of them would object when Trump wins, for no reason other than they just don’t like him."

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is "expecting" Democrats to object to the outcome of the 2024 election if Donald Trump is elected to be the President of the United States. This comes as polling is showing the GOP nominee pulling ahead in vital battleground states such as Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Georgia.

“Democrats have now made it a tradition to object to electors, certain slates of electors, and they have [done so] every single time a Republican president has won in the last quarter-century,” Johnson told the New York Post. “They have objected for often ridiculous reasons, and I expect that many of them would object when Trump wins, for no reason other than they just don’t like him, and that’s not the way the system works."

Some Democrats have already been laying the groundwork for some of these "objections," such as Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), who has previously suggested that Congress will have to stop him from becoming president if he is elected. He told reporters earlier in October he would accept the results if Trump "won a free, fair and honest election, then we would obviously accept it,” however, he “definitely” did not think that would be the case.

Raskin said that Trump “is doing whatever he can to try to interfere with the process, whether we’re talking about manipulating Electoral College counts in Nebraska or manipulating the vote count in Georgia or imposing other kinds of impediments."

Other Democrats also have indicated that they are not keen on taking a Trump win openly. Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) said, “We have to see how it all happens," as the ranking member on the House rules committee. When he was asked if the Democrats would accept the outcome if Trump won, he said, “My expectation is that we would, assuming everything goes the way we expect it to.”

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), who also objected to the election of George W. Bush, also said this month when asked about certifying the results, "I don't know what kind of shenanigans he is planning," and added, "We would have to, in any election ... make sure that all the rules have been followed.”
