The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the arrest of an illegal immigrant truck driver after a crash in Indianapolis left a US citizen hospitalized in critical condition.

According to DHS, 25-year-old Indian national Sukhdev Singh was driving a semi-truck on March 6 at approximately 6:30 pm when he struck a pedestrian near East Raymond Street and Interstate 65. Indiana State Police responded to the scene, arrested Singh, and contacted US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

ICE agents arrived later that evening and took Singh into custody. He will remain in ICE custody pending the outcome of immigration proceedings. The victim was transported to a local hospital and remained in critical condition as of DHS’s announcement.

Federal officials said Singh had been issued a non-domiciled Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) by the state of New York on January 2, 2025. DHS officials criticized New York’s policy that allowed Singh to obtain the license. “It is common sense: illegal aliens should not be operating 18-wheelers on American highways. We are praying this individual makes a full recovery,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis. “It is incredibly dangerous for illegal aliens, who often don't know our traffic laws or even English, to be operating 18-wheelers on America’s roads. Sanctuary governors like Kathy Hochul must stop giving illegal aliens driver’s licenses before even more Americans get injured or killed.”

The agency also pointed to a similar case announced in October involving another illegal immigrant from India, identified as Anmol Anmol, who was issued a CDL by New York under the name “No Name Given Anmol.” ICE said records showed Anmol entered the United States illegally in 2023 and was later placed into removal proceedings.

The crash adds to growing scrutiny over illegal immigrant truck drivers operating commercial vehicles in the United States. Last year, Indian national Harjinder Singh, who was in the country illegally, was charged with vehicular manslaughter after allegedly making an illegal U-turn in a semi-truck on a Florida highway that resulted in the deaths of three people. Federal investigators later found Singh failed an English proficiency test and could identify only one of four highway traffic signs during questioning.

Another case involved Kamalpreet Singh, an illegal immigrant truck driver arrested in Washington state after a crash that killed a 29-year-old man when his tractor-trailer slammed into stopped traffic. Investigators said the truck driver made no attempt to brake before impact and allegedly falsified his electronic driving logbook.
