Nelson W. Mijango Santos, an illegal immigrant, is accused of "disemboweling" a man with a folding knife in a parking lot in Madison, Wisconsin. According to Wisconsin Right Now, Santos allegedly asked the victim, "Do you want to die?" and "Do you want to see the devil with me?" before attacking him, leaving the victim’s intestines exposed from his stomach.

The incident occurred on August 16, when police responded to a call at the Men’s Shelter in Madison. Upon arrival, officers discovered a chaotic scene with people shouting in Spanish and pointing toward a vehicle. One individual showed officers a severe stomach wound with what “appeared to be his intestines sticking out of his stomach,” according to the criminal complaint.

As officers arrived, the vehicle quickly fled the scene. One officer recognized the driver, Santos, from a previous incident involving machetes and knives. Officers stopped the car and ordered Santos to exit, but he refused, returning to the vehicle. He then began drinking from a beer can, pointed to his throat, and mouthed the words “shoot me” to the officers.

Santos then led police on a chase, driving over tire deflation devices before stopping and exiting his vehicle. He retrieved what appeared to be a firearm from the car and pointed it at the officers, though it had an "orange tip" typically found on toy guns, and was suspected to be fake. Santos then grabbed a machete-style sword and began stabbing himself in the chest, taunting officers to shoot him.

Officers responded by using multiple less lethal rounds as Santos continued to injure himself. He eventually collapsed and stopped moving.

Santos, speaking in Spanish, claimed the victim had tried to kill him, and that he acted in self-defense while sleeping in his car. The victim, however, stated he had simply been walking through the parking lot when Santos lunged at him and stabbed him in the stomach.
