The driver of the SUV was identified as 29-year-old Julio Cucul Bol, of Guatemala.
20-year-old Katie Abraham and 21-year-old Chloe Polzin were at a red light in Urbana when they were struck. Abraham died at the scene while Polzin died the following day, according to Fox 32.
"They were at a stoplight and there was someone who was driving drunk who hit them from behind at full force. And following the accident, he fled on foot," said Joe Abraham, Katie Abraham’s father.
The crash occurred at around 1:55 am on January 19 at the intersection of University and Coler Avenues. A Honda Civic traveling eastbound on University stopped at Coler for a red light when a Mitsubishi SUV traveling in the same direction at a high speed hit the Civic.
Urbana police said that the collision had caused serious damage to both vehicles and multiple injuries. There were five people in the Civic at the time and all were transported to the hospital. The driver of the SUV fled on foot.
The driver of the SUV was identified as 29-year-old Julio Cucul Bol, of Guatemala. According to Fox 32, he had previously used the alias of Juan Jahaziel Saenz-Suarez and had falsified Mexican paperwork.
A press release from the Urbana Police Department stated that the US Marshals Service that Bol, referred to as Saenz-Suarez, was located in Milford, Texas aboard an El Expreso bus destined for Matamoros, Mexico on the morning of January 22 and was taken into custody.
Urbana Police Chief Larry D. Boone said in a statement, "This type of partnership is essential to local law enforcement, and I would like to thank the women and men of the Urbana Police Department and the US Marshals Service for their efforts in capturing Saenz-Suarez."
He has been charged with two counts of leaving the scene of a Personal Injury Crash Resulting in death, Aggravated Driving Under the Influence Resulting in Death, and two counts of Reckless Homicide.
Michelle, Abraham’s stepmother said, "We were very concerned when we found out he wasn't from here. We were afraid he was going to flee. So knowing that they caught him and we have a chance to get justice for Katie, that was great because that's all we want. We want justice for Katie. We want this man to have the maximum sentence possible for all the pain he's caused our family."
Joe Abraham said, "I don't want to get too political because that's not going to bring Katie back, but certainly, I would like to see more vetting. He was drinking. He was driving, but… is that who we want when we're thinking about immigration?"
