“If you’re in the country illegally, you're on the table, because it's not OK to, you know, violate the laws of this country."
Tom Homan, the Trump administration’s newly appointed “border czar,” delivered a direct message to illegal immigrants in the United States, emphasizing that there are “consequences” for entering the country unlawfully. Homan also urged those in the country illegally to leave voluntarily before they are eventually arrested.
In an interview on ABC’s This Week with co-anchor Martha Raddatz, Homan highlighted the administration’s strict immigration policies aimed at deterring individuals from entering and remaining in the country illegally.
During its initial days, the Trump administration has focused on arresting illegal immigrants with criminal records. However, Homan made it clear that enforcement efforts will extend beyond this group.
“If you’re in the country illegally, you're on the table, because it's not OK to, you know, violate the laws of this country,” Homan explained. “You got to remember, every time you enter this country illegally, you violated a crime under Title Eight, the United States Code 1325, it's a crime. So, if you're in a country illegally, you got a problem. And that's why I'm hoping those who are in the country illegally, who have not been ordered removed by the federal judge, should leave,”
“If we don't show there's consequences, you're never going to fix the border problem," Homan added.
When asked by Raddatz whether deportations would continue daily over the next four years and if the US military would assist in these efforts, Homan answered unequivocally, “Yes.”
The interview follows a week of heightened immigration enforcement activity immediately after Trump took office on Monday. The president has declared a national emergency at the southern border and has ordered active-duty troops to assist in border security efforts. US military aircraft have also been deployed to facilitate deportations, returning illegal immigrants to their home countries.
