Governor Kim Reynolds of Iowa released a statement on Thursday in response to the Biden administration's criticism of her state's ban on mask mandates. She called the pressure from the administration "misplaced."
Reynolds detailed her continued commitment to enforcing her state's ban on mask mandates in statement to KWWL news, in light of her office receiving a letter from Education Secretary Miguel Cardona regarding the ban. The letter from Cardona specifically focused on the ban on mask mandates in schools.
"We have a crisis at the border, a disaster in Afghanistan, and inflation is soaring. President Biden is failing on each of these issues," Reynolds said, "yet he is now launching an attack against governors like myself for trusting our people to decide what’s best for them. The President's priorities are misplaced. I have had enough, and I know Iowans have too. I’ll continue to do whatever is necessary to defend and preserve the fundamental rights and liberties afforded to any American citizen."
In line with the direction that Florida, South Dakota, Texas, Arizona, and other states are taking, Reynolds continued to ensure that Iowans are given the freedom to make choices for themselves about masks. Her focus is on parents being able to make decisions for their children about masks, without interference from the state or federal governments.
Biden continues to threaten legal action against states who no longer have mask mandates and have put legislation in place that prevents future mandates.
On Wednesday Biden said, "I'm directing the secretary of education, an educator himself, to take additional steps to protect our children. This includes using all of his oversight authorities and legal action, if appropriate, against governors who are trying to block and intimidate local school officials and educators."
