“They can't even identify what it is that Donald Trump did."
On Sunday, Senator JD Vance claimed that New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg only charged former President Donald Trump because he ran for president and suggested that he can't even identify a crime he committed.
In an interview on CNN's State of the Union, Host Dana Bash asked if Vance thought Trump should be treated differently as a former President to which he responded, "Well I don't think he should be treated differently at all Dana, but I certainly think he is being treated differently."
"The only thing Alvin Bragg, the New York prosecutors team thinks that Donald Trump did wrong is he ran for president in 2024 and he looks to be on the cusp of victory," Vance added. "If you look at the underlying argument of the case, they can't even identify what it is that Donald Trump did."
"They said he committed a paperwork violation in service to a crime, but they won't even specify the crime that he committed," he said. Vance then suggested the attacks were a distraction from Biden's failed record as the leader of the country.
Former President Trump was indicted in New York City for allegedly falsifying business records. Trump has long contended that the trial is a "scam."
Last month on Truth Social, Trump said, "This scam 'rushed' trial taking place in a 95% democrat area is a planned and coordinated witch hunt that could have been brought 8 years ago, but everybody passed." He added, "Instead they waited and brought it right in the middle of my presidential campaign against the worst and most incompetent president ever, crooked Joe Biden."
Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, is expected to take the stand this week. A letter obtained last year stated that it was Cohen who paid Daniels $130,000 out of his pocket in 2016, and "Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms. Clifford, and neither reimbursed Mr. Cohen for the payment directly or indirectly."
