Johnny Depp has resigned from his role as "Gellert Grindelwald" in the "Fantastic Beasts" movie franchise based off of the magical wizarding world J.K. Rowling created.

Depp, in an Instagram post, announced that Warner Brothers asked him to pull out of the movies. The exit comes just days after Depp lost a libel case in the United Kingdom against The Sun. The tabloid paper described him as a "wife beater," a charge he has contested.

Amber Heard, who had accused Depp of abuse, was later found to be abusive herself. During their tumultuous relationship, Heard had said that Depp had hit her, but she had declined to mention that she had hurt him as well.

The untitled third 'Fantastic Beasts' film, directed by David Yates from a screenplay by J. K. Rowling and Steve Kloves is scheduled to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures on November 12 2021.

There is no word on who will replace Johnny Depp for the upcoming film.
