"There are no participation trophies in endgame democracy."
"An arthritic status quo, unwilling or unable to respond in any way to the concerns of voters who just received new and urgent information about their candidate also erodes confidence and faith in the system of government," Stewart said. "'Get on board or shut the f*ck up' is not, is not" he said to cheers, "a particularly pro-Democracy bumper sticker."
Stewart, a stalwart Trump critic, lambasted the Democrats for their apparent unwillingness to even consider replacing incumbent President Biden on the November ticket. He called out party leaders for their claims that there's simply not enough time between now and November to consider anyone else, noting that both France and the UK just had "snap elections" in which they got organized, set an election day, got people out to vote, and changed their leadership rather quickly.
As for the abbreviated period of time between now and November, Stewart posited that it should be possible to use the Democratic National Convention, coming up in August in Chicago, to allow for a primary posed to the delegates at the convention alone. In this truncated process, he suggested that potential candidates could throw their proverbial hats into the ring, give speeches, and go through a few rounds of voting. At the end of the DNC, Stewart said, the Party could emerge unified with a candidate who may or may not be Biden.
"Do you understand the opportunity here?" He said. "Do you have any idea how thirsty Americans are for any hint of inspiration or leadership and a release from this choice between a megalomaniac and a suffocating gerontocracy? It is crushing our f*cking spirit!
Priot to that tirade, Stewart aired a clip of Biden from his recent interview with George Stephanopoulos, which was meant to reassure voters of his competency after his atrocious debate performance at the end of June. The interview did not do that, however, as Biden came off as an old man who is unwilling to face his own encroaching mortality and pass off the reins of power to younger, more capable Americans. The comment that showed that fully was the one Stewart blasted.
"I'll feel as long as I gave it my all and I did the goodest job I know I can do," Biden said when asked what he would do if he loses to Trump after there were so many doubts raised about his own viability as a candidate. "That's what this is about."
"That's not what this is about!" Stewart screamed in response to the clip. "There are no participation trophies in endgame democracy." Then Stewart claimed complete ignorance as to Biden's aged condition and said no one else really knew about it either.
"And its really troubling that this new information has been introduced, we just learned about this and we're all being told 'well, you should have thought of that before you knew it.'"
