Jon Stewart, longtime comedian, social commentator, and recent show host for Apple TV+, says he's thought about running for office given who's there now.
For the 59-year old entertainment personality, the idea is not a question of whether or not a potential campaign is a good fit, but rather a reactionary impulse due to actions of the "sh*theads" currently in Congress.
In a recent appearance on the podcast "Sway" with New York Times columnist Kara Swisher, Stewart told listeners it was an option he felt compelled to explore.
"Oh, God. How do you not?” Steward said when asked about whether he had considered the possibility as a political hopeful. "It's sort of like when you get in a car and the one driver's drunk, and you're like, 'Did you ever think about taking the wheel?' You're like, 'Yeah, I did,'" he continued during the discussion.
Stewart has admitted he's questioned whether or not he has the temperament for office. Despite his repeated criticisms of the representatives currently in office, Stewart has acknowledged he doesn't know whether he would be a good fit for the kind of patience it would take to work with representatives from across the aisle.
"It's having the patience, like, 'How come that person gets to still be here? Make that person leave!'" Stewart said. He admits that he would have to likely give up some of his influence if he chose to pursue the route of running for office.
"Sometimes I feel like, well, I can be more effective on the outside than on the inside," Stewart said, expressing self-caution over the suggestion.
Recently, Stewart has attacked Republican figures like Fox News host Tucker Carlson and former President Donald Trump for comments they've made about Russian President Vladimir Putin. As the war on Ukraine continues to escalate in the region, Stewart has called out the Republican Party for what he alleges is a lax attitude towards calling out Putin personally. He has singled Carlson out, calling the primetime Fox News anchor a "dishonest propagandist" and gone after the former commander-in-chief for praising the Russian president's tactical ingenuity.
"I think for years, its been pretty clear that they would much rather do a deal with Putin than [House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)]," Stewart said. "They view Putin as a defender of Western civilization. They view him as an ideological brother."
