Joy Reid calls Renee Good's death a 'George Floyd moment,' claims she was 'supposed to be safe' due to 'white privilege'

Former MSNBC host Joy Reid said that Renee Good was “supposed to be safe” from law enforcement because she had “white privilege,” and described her death as a “George Floyd moment” for anti-ICE protests.

Reid made the comments Monday during an appearance on the podcast “Way Up with Angela Yee,” where she discussed the death of Renee Nicole Good. There, Reid admitted that Good was part of a group trained to disrupt ICE operations targeting illegal immigrants.

“This woman was part of a group of people who they train to try to be ICE interrupters. And what they try to do is observe what ICE is doing, film them, and try to use their white privilege to be honest, they’re mainly white people, which is what we asked them to do, right?” Reid said. “Because black people… we can’t put our bodies on the line because cops will shoot us.”

“And so the presumption had been, particularly a white woman, because remember, part of the rationale for doing this with ICE is to save white women, ‘pristine white women,’ from being ravaged by ‘criminal brown men,’” Reid continued. “So, they, white women, have been taking the lead in being the ones to step forward and challenge ICE.”

Reid acknowledged that Good and her wife blocked a roadway before the fatal shooting in an attempt to prevent ICE agents from detaining illegal immigrants in a neighborhood. Reid said ICE ordered Good out of her vehicle, after which Good “panicked” and began to “back up” her car to get out of the way. Reid claimed that was when an ICE agent shot her.

However, video of the incident shows Good driving her vehicle toward an ICE agent. The agent then fired his weapon, killing Good after she appeared to weaponize her vehicle. Authorities have said the agent, Jonathan Ross, was struck by Good’s vehicle during the encounter and later treated for internal bleeding to his torso.

Despite the circumstances shown on video, Reid characterized the shooting as a “George Floyd moment,” arguing that Floyd’s death showed police will “just kill” black people, while Good’s death demonstrates that even those “supposed to be safe” with law enforcement can be killed.

“Nobody’s safe. White women aren’t safe. They’ll kill them too,” Reid said,  adding that Good will become the “George Floyd” of the growing movement resisting ICE operations.
